Before there was Woody Allen, there was Shelley Berman,
the master of modern neuroses. He was an actor rooted in improvisational
theater, and he devised carefully polished and set pieces -- this was
why he was notorious for insisting on quiet in nightclubs. His album,
Inside Shelley Berman, released in 1960, was one of the first comedy albums
to hit the best-seller list.
