Ruth Draper was born into a well-to-do New York family in 1884. From the time she was a young girl, she carefully—meticulously—studied the people around her—whether it was the Jewish tailor who sewed for the family or the residents of the Maine village where the Drapers kept a summer home. She spun these observations into little one-person sketches, which she presented at parties. She went on to travel throughout the United States and Europe, performing at charity events and at the invitation of those in elite social circles. Finally, in January of 1920, she made her professional stage debut at London’s Aeolian Hall.
