With her zany style and easygoing
nature, there wasn’t an audience Gilda Radner couldn’t win over.
She was born in my hometown, Detroit —named after Rita Hayworth’s
character in the movie “Gilda.” After dabbling in theater at
the University of Michigan, she followed a boyfriend to Canada and got
her first big break—a part in the Toronto production of “Godspell,”
with Martin Short and Eugene Levy. There was a hitch with The Second City
troupe, then a move to New York and work on the “National Lampoon
Show.” And in 1975—without even an audition—she was the
first person signed for “Saturday Night Live.”
